A drawing of A and her favourite toy, a smelly stuffed dog called Bao.
When I think of my childhood I feel like I come from another era:
where kids were allowed to play outside in the neighborhood.
Like free range kids.
Today I'm scared to  leave her alone in the garden .
Why is that? what happened?
It's ours a generation of paranoid parents?

Those are some of the best memories of my childhood. That freedom we had and that our children will never experience. I always walked to and from school with my friends from day one. And I loved it!

The other day I was talking to a friend that told me a funny story. When she was 8 she went with her brother to the West End to a shop that sold graphic novels. When they were in the West End they were stopped by the police that drove them to the police station. The police called their mum and asked her to come to pick up the children. My friend's mum refused to pick them up from the police station!!! She told the police she was really busy doing the housework!!! She had allowed the children to go out and had a go at the police for stopping them. The police ended up driving the children home. Somehow I cannot imagine that happening nowadays.

I'll be sure to post a photo of it in my house on my blog when it arrives. :) :)

lovely drawing! I also remember my childhood completely different, we were wearing the same cloths for several days and only got home for dinner, lunch and before dark, but those were the sixties :-)

I want an ipad:)!
I don't know whether we're paranoid, or whether there are real dangers, or whether we should just busy ourselves more with our own life (like the mother in explodingcucumber above) and let our children live their own more.

To exploding cucumber: that story is an example of how incredibly relaxed our parents were, I remember my brother going out fishing at the seaside near home(when he was 10y.)all day by himself, from early morning only to be back for supper, everyday for the summer break!!!
Today is even un-thinkable...or at least for me!

To Francesca: I totally agree with you but at the same time I find it difficult, because if something happens then I will be devastated.
So it's hard to find the balance.

To all: thank you, Anita is an happy child and we are so lucky to live in places that are war free, with lots of food available and the opportunity to make choices, so I guess that makes us happy parents too ;)

woups :-) wrong post. Maybe I should go to the previous post and comment that this is a sweet self portrait :-))
I hear what you say, and think the same sometimes. I wonder in which way they will become different adults than our generation is, having been more supervised and controlled growing up. Not that one is better than the other. Just different.
